Lesson 10: Ralph Workman study: “Yet Forty Days” Part 2
The Double Forty Period Will Be A Spiritual Judgment Followed By A Physical Judgment
We read in Numbers 14:29-39:
“29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35I Jehovah have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. 36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, 37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before Jehovah. 38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. 39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
Notice that the majority of Israelites did not die right away for their rebellion against God it occurred over a forty-year period. The fact that they did not die right away is comparable to being under spiritual judgment just, as Adam and Eve did not die right away after eating the forbidden fruit. Adam did not die until he was 930 years old. God had commanded Adam and Eve that in the day you eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you will surely die (ref. Gen. 2:17). You see Adam and Eve did not die right away physically but they died spiritually. In like manner to Adam and Eve the rebelling Israelites received a spiritual death sentence. In like manner the unsaved today are under a spiritual judgment. None of the unsaved will make it through this double forty period of Judgment Day. The unsaved that die by accidents and natural causes during this time period will no longer have life. The majority of the unsaved will die at the end of Judgment Day when God destroys the heavens and the earth with no possibility of ever receiving their life back.
The Unsaved Will Have To Bear Their Own Sins During The Double Forty Period Of Judgment Day
We read in Numbers 14:34 & 35:
“34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35I Jehovah have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil
congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
The Israelites who did not trust God to deliver them into the Promised Land (heaven) had to bear their own sins during this double forty period. Likewise today the unsaved who do not trust God to deliver them into the kingdom of heaven will have to bear their own sins during this double forty period of Judgment Day. Unfortunately since they do not have Christ as their covering they will be paying for their own sins and that payment is death.
The Elect Will Be Passing Through The Double Forty Period Of Judgment Day
We read in Numbers 14:29-31:
“29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
Joshua, Caleb and the little ones typify the elect of God. Even though Joshua and Caleb trusted God to deliver them into the Promised Land (heaven) God nevertheless required them to pass through the double forty period with the wicked Israelites (the unsaved) in the wilderness. However they were not the recipients of God’s judgment. For they did not die in the wilderness like the unsaved Israelites but survived through the double forty period and entered into the Promised Land (heaven). The little ones or the little children here are also a type of the elect. God in the Bible typifies little children as the elect. The little ones had no choice in the matter as to whether or not to enter the Promised Land (heaven). In the same manner we the elect have no choice. God does all the work in saving.
We have found (it is self evident) that God expects the elect to pass through this double forty period of Judgment Day. Likewise we will not be under God’s judgment during this period of time but we will be tested. For Christ paid the price of Judgment Day for our sins from before the foundation of the world.
The Double Forty Time Period Of Judgment Day Is A Period Of Time When Salvation Is No Longer Available
We read on in Numbers 14:40-45;
40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which Jehovah hath promised: for we have sinned. 41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of Jehovah? but it shall not prosper. 42Go not up, for Jehovah is not among you; that ye
be not smitten before your enemies. 43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from Jehovah, therefore Jehovah will not be with you. 44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.”
After God declared that all who were twenty years old and upward save Caleb and Joshua would not go into the Promise Land (heaven) because of their sin but wander in the wilderness forty years until all were consumed (which was equivalent to declaring that they would not be saved and that they have received the penalty of death) some of the people decided to take matters into there own hands. They decided against God’s will and they attempted to enter the Promised Land (heaven) anyway. That is they were telling God that salvation was still available when it was not. What was the result? The result was that the Amalekites and the Canaanites killed them all. God had declared that they would die and regardless of what action they took they died and there was no salvation. You see this is equivalent to those today who are saying that God is still saving during this double forty Judgment Day time period that we have now entered into after May 21st, 2011. They are turning a blind eye to God’s word to the fact that He is no longer saving during this time period of Judgment Day. They are taking matters into there own hands by declaring that God is still saving when He is not. Sadly regardless of their efforts they will not be saved during this double forty time period of Judgment Day. God has passed judgment on them and they will die spiritually in this time period of Judgment Day. When God shut the door of the Ark on May 21st, 2011 that started the spiritual double forty period of Judgment Day when no more salvation would be available.
The Double Forty Period of Judgment Day Will Be A Time Of Testing
As a direct result of Israel’s rebellion of not trusting God to deliver them into the Promised Land (heaven) God put the double forty time period in place as we read in Numbers 14:34;
“After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.”
God utilized this double forty time period to test His people (those who identify with Him) before bringing them into the Promised Land (heaven) as we read in Deuteronomy 8:2;
“2And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
God utilizes the double forty period of Judgment Day to humble the elect and to test the elect. The elect of course will pass the test because Christ past the test on our behalf. The elect will know that we have entered Judgment Day and that our deliverance into heaven is very close. However those who identify with Christ but are not saved will fail the test. They will prove that they are not the children of God by their disobedience to God’s word. They will be persuading the hearts of the people that we cannot know the day and the hour that God will not deliver us. They will be saying that Jesus could come at anytime thus putting the idea in the hearts of the people that our deliverance into heaven is many years off and something we should not be concerned with.
The Elect Live By The Word Of God During This Double Forty Period Of Judgment Day
Deuteronomy 8:2 & 3:
“2And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. 3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.”
Manna typifies the word of God in that as we receive our physical life from the manna that has been provided by God we receive our spiritual life from the word of God. Notice in verse 3 that the manna or word of God that we are receiving during this double forty period of Judgment Day is the word of God that our fathers and we did not know. God is opening up the scriptures to us in this day to reveal things that we could not have known earlier because they were hidden. We are at the end of time and God is opening up the little book (the Bible) that has been reserved for the end of time (ref. Dan 12).
“19Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go. 20Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. 21Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.”
God will not forsake us during this spiritual forty period of Judgment Day. His word will lead us through this difficult time (as demonstrated by the manna, water and
cloud) and He will not let our clothes wax old (cause our covering of salvation to be lost).
“47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48I am that bread of life. 49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.”
“1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Bread or manna typifies the word of God in that as we receive our physical life from the bread we receive our spiritual life from the word of God. However the physical bread counts for nothing it is the spiritual bread the word of God where we receive our spiritual eternal life. We read that the word became flesh and dwelt among us (ref. John 1:14). That is Jesus who is the word became flesh and dwelt among us. Therefore the word is God. And when Jesus declares that we must eat His flesh in order to have eternal life He is talking about eating the word. That is where we get our spiritual nourishment. When we eat of the spiritual word of God we will not die. But those who ate the physical manna are dead. Jesus declares that we must eat his flesh and so God is teaching us that during this time it is not the physical but the spiritual word of God that we need for life. The flesh or physical counts for nothing. During the forty days and forty nights (double forty time period) that Christ spent in the wilderness being tested of Satan He demonstrated that our life comes from the spiritual word of God not from the physical bread. By fasting forty days and forty nights Jesus is demonstrating that He is living off of the spiritual word of God only during this period of time. We do not get our eternal life from the physical bread that we eat but from the spiritual word of God. If we look at the word of God through physical eyes rather then spiritual eyes we will not be receiving the spiritual
nourishment to sustain us. If we cannot understand the spiritual word of God we will not know when Christ returns. Christ will come upon us like a thief in the night to take away our spiritual life. If we are focusing on a physical Judgment Day and not looking into the spiritual word of God we will totally miss the fact that we are in a spiritual Judgment Day. That is why the spiritual word of God is so very important during this double forty period of Judgment Day. It is a matter of life and death.
Event 2 – Moses Delivers The Stone Tables Of The Law
Please read the following before proceeding on with our study;
Exodus chapters 24:12-18, 32-34:10 & 34:27-30 Deuteronomy 9:8–10:10
Moses (who typifies Christ) went up into Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights to receive the stone tables of the law from God and deliver them to the people of Israel. When Moses (Christ) returned from the mountain with the stone tables of the law in his hand and found that the people of Israel had rebelled against God he became very angry and broke the tables. When the people realized that Moses (Christ) had been gone for many days they lost trust that God would deliver them into the Promised Land (heaven) and so they began to worship a golden calf, a false God of their own making. God knowing ahead of time that the people were a rebellious people put the double forty time period in place as a test. God knew full well that Moses (Christ) stay in the mountain for forty days and forty nights would cause the rebellious people of Israel to believe that he was not coming back. After this God commanded Moses to return to the mountain a second time (for forty days and forty nights) to receive a replacement set of stone tables “like unto the first”, which Moses delivered to the people. Let’s take a moment to consider the spiritual meaning of the stone tables of the law. We know that the law has to do with judgment for the Bible indicates that the unsaved are under the law and it will be that law which will judge them on Judgment Day. On Judgment Day the law of God will be raining down in judgment upon the unsaved just as the forty days and forty nights of rain which also typified the law of God rained down upon the unsaved of Noah’s day. The law also typifies Jesus because Jesus is the law of God or word of God (ref. John 1:14). Stone in the Bible also typifies Jesus. The stone tables of the law that were delivered by Moses to the people therefore typify Christ coming in judgment that is Judgment Day. Observe that the law of God (Judgment Day) was delivered twice at the end of a forty-day period. Notice also that although there were two Judgment Days (deliveries of the law) only one physical delivery of the law or Judgment Day actually occurred. The first delivery of the law (Judgment Day) did not occur because the stone tables were broken. This in turn forced a replacement or second delivery of the law “like unto the first”. Therefore the first delivery of the law was a demonstration of the second. To reinforce this the broken stone tables of the law (which occurred at the first delivery of the law) typify Christ body that was
broken at the cross. At the Last Supper Jesus broke bread and proclaimed in 1 Corinthians 11:24 just before He went to the cross:
“And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
We know and understand that the cross was a demonstration of the fact that Christ paid for the sins of the elect from before the foundation of the world. Therefore the first delivery of the law (Judgment Day) at the end of the first forty was a demonstration pointing to the second delivery of the law (Judgment Day) that actually did occur at the end of the second forty. The two forties therefore point to one and the same Judgment Day. That is the two forties are one just as the forty days and forty nights of the flood are one forty day period typifying Judgment Day. So again we see that God through the double forties is associating this event with the duration of Judgment Day and the deliverance of His people into heaven. God has set up this Biblical event and others in the Bible in such a way that we recognize the double forties and identify or associate them with the period of Judgment Day.
Event 3 – Jesus Returns In The Same Manner That He Left
The Bible passage in Acts 1:1-11 is concerned with that time period when Jesus departed from this world and went back into heaven. We read here that Jesus was seen by the elect forty days prior to returning to heaven. And that Jesus would return in like manner as He was seen going.
“1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
In addition to the above information we find it interesting that Jesus time here on earth was marked by a double forty time period.
We read in Mark 1:12-13
“12And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. 13And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.”
Immediately after John the Baptist baptized Jesus the spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness to be tested forty days. That is Jesus began His ministry here on earth with a forty day period. We therefore find that Jesus started His ministry with a forty day period and ended His ministry with a forty day period. His ministry here on earth was marked by a double forty.
If Christ is returning in like manner as He departed into heaven then we will have to consider the conditions surrounding His departure from this world. Because this would give us an idea of the conditions we could expect upon His return. Below is a list of observations that can be made in Acts 1:1-11 surrounding His departure;
- The forty-day period after the cross typifies the spiritual forty-day period of Judgment Day.
- Jesus departed in a cloud.
- Only the apostles and disciples of Jesus (the elect) were witnesses of Jesusduring the forty-day period.
- Jesus was raptured at the end of the forty-day period.
- Jesus time here on earth was marked by a double forty time period.
- Jesus departed at the very time the apostles (the elect) were expecting Jesusto restore the physical kingdom to Israel.
- The elect should not depart from Jerusalem.
- The elect should wait for the promise.
- The elect will be witnesses of Him.We would expect to see these conditions upon the return of Jesus at Judgment Day, which we understand to have begun on May 21st, 2011.Lets examine each of these conditions to see how they apply to the spiritual forty time period of Judgment Day that we are currently living in.
The Forty-Day Period After The Cross Typifies The Spiritual Forty Day Period Of Judgment Day
We will find that the forty-day period after the cross in many ways reflects the same spiritual characteristics as our present spiritual forty-day period of Judgment Day. That is this forty-day period typifies the spiritual forty-day period of Judgment Day.
Some verses in this forty-day period can refer to both the church age and Judgment Day. Some verses only apply to the church age. We will find that if we properly understand the nature of Judgment Day we can rightly divide those verses that make reference to the church age from those that make reference to Judgment Day. We will be addressing some of these verses now to see how they apply to the spiritual forty Judgment Day period that we are now currently in. And later on in our study we will be looking at some additional verses that take place in this forty- day period after the cross.
Jesus Departed In A Cloud
We read in Acts 1:9-11
“ 9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
We read here that a cloud received Jesus out of their sight. And that Jesus would be returning in the same manner as He was seen going into heaven. Does this indicate that Jesus will be returning physically in a cloud as when He left or should we examine this verse spiritually? Most would say that it is referring to His physical return in a cloud. But remember the Bible is a spiritual book as we read in John 6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” When we search the Bible we find that the word cloud typifies the word of God. Spiritually speaking then we would have to say that since Jesus was seen being received into a cloud He would then have to be seen returning in a cloud that is returning in the word of God. When you think about it we the elect today only witness the event in Acts 1 of Jesus leaving in the cloud through the Bible. We were not there physically to see it. Likewise we will witness His return through the word of God. In addition we are aware of the enormous Biblical information that proves Judgment Day began on May 21st, 2011. As a result we are constrained to look at Jesus return spiritually for if Jesus had arrived physically we would have seen Him arrive in a cloud on May 21st, 2011.
Based on our spiritual understanding of the meaning of the word cloud and other information from the Bible we know that Jesus has returned spiritually in the word of God to bring judgment on the world during this spiritual forty time period of Judgment Day.
Only The Apostles Of Jesus (the elect) Were Witnesses Of Jesus During The Forty-Day Period
When we examine the period of the last forty days of Jesus ministry here on earth we find that He revealed Himself only to the apostles and disciples (the elect).
Therefore we can expect upon Jesus return that He will reveal Himself only to the elect. You see Jesus return in judgment on May 21st, 2011 could only be seen through the Bible. The world expected a physical judgment. At first even the elect were confused when they did not see a physical judgment on that day because the elect were also expecting a physical judgment. However the child of God went back to the Bible and found that Jesus truly did return in spiritual judgment through the Bible. Since the world can only see the physical and cannot see the spiritual word of God Jesus has revealed Himself to the elect only through the word of God. There are many elect that are still struggling with this question. Perhaps they may wake up to this fact that God has returned through His word. We find that Thomas doubted during this forty day period. Jesus used him as an example when He made the statement in John 20:29; “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed”. Likewise during this spiritual forty time period of Judgment Day those that have not physically witnessed Christ return but have witnessed it through the word of God and still believe are those that have been blessed (the elect). On the other hand those who do not believe, those who have not seen the physical return of Christ and cannot see His return spiritually through the word of God are the unsaved individuals who have not been blessed. As a direct result of this spiritual blindness Jesus returned on May 21st, 2011 like a thief in the night for the unsaved who are now under the judgment of God. But the elect are not in darkness that day should overtake them as a thief in the night because they are the children of light – the light of the Gospel. The light that helps them to see in the darkness of Judgment Day.
Jesus Was Raptured At The End of The Forty-Day Period
What we find very interesting about this forty-day period is that Jesus was raptured or taken up at the very end of this period. In like manner we who are the elect that identify with Jesus expect to be raptured at the end of this spiritual forty period of Judgment Day that we now find ourselves in.
Jesus Time Here On Earth Was Marked By A Double Forty Time Period
We see that God has placed a forty day period right at the very beginning and right at the very end of Jesus ministry here on earth so that there would be no misunderstandings about the fact that this period of time is marked by a double forty. But why would God do this? We can clearly see that Jesus first appearance on earth is marked by a double forty and also His return at Judgment Day is marked with a double forty. Jesus left a double forty time period and in like manner He will be returning to a double forty time period. We read in another place regarding the coming of Christ in Matthew 24:37; “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” We find here that Jesus’ coming in judgment is marked by double forties just as in the days of Noah when God came in judgment with forty days and forty nights of rain. The first time Christ came to earth He came as the savior or deliverer and the second time He comes in judgment. Both judgment and deliverance are a characteristic found in Judgment Day as God judges the world and
delivers the elect into the kingdom of heaven during the double forty time period of Judgment Day. The two are one in that they are both pointing to one and the same Judgment Day. The two are one just as the forty days and forty nights of the flood are one forty day period in which the elect were delivered and the unsaved judged.
Jesus Departed At The Very Time The Apostles (the elect) Were Expecting Jesus To Restore The Physical Kingdom To Israel
In verse 7 of Acts 1 the apostles asked Jesus a very interesting question; “When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” This was the very last question or expectation that the elect had right before Jesus was taken up into heaven at the very end of the double forty time period. Effectively they are asking will you at this time restore the kingdom of heaven? Spiritually the answer is yes this is the time God will restore the kingdom of heaven. He will restore it right at the very end of the double forty time period of Judgment Day. That is right at the very end of the spiritual forty time period of Judgment Day, which is October 7th, 2015. God will restore the kingdom of heaven to the elect and destroy the heavens and the earth. In regard to this you see they were expecting God to restore a physical kingdom at His departure at the end of the forty-day time period just as we were expecting a physical judgment upon His return. But the kingdom to be restored is the kingdom of heaven not a physical kingdom here on earth. And the physical judgment that we were expecting was not physical at all but a spiritual judgment. God is not only giving us some insight as to the timing of the last day but He is also demonstrating what the expectations would be like upon His return. You see in that day they made the mistake of looking for a physical kingdom upon Christ departure just as we were looking for a physical judgment upon Christ arrival. Christ truly has returned in the same manner that He left. We made the same mistake that was made by the elect in that day. Before Christ left in that day for heaven the elect were looking for the physical and now upon Christ return in judgment on May 21st, 2011 we the elect were looking for a physical judgment. That is why the men in white apparel asked the question why stand ye gazing up into heaven? In other words why would you be looking up to heaven for Christ? For we are not to expect Christ to make a physical appearance by coming down from heaven in judgment. He will be returning spiritually on the pages of the Bible to judge the world. God quickly opened the eyes of the elect to the fact that May 21st, 2011 was the beginning of a spiritual judgment. However when Jesus did not return in physical judgment this became a test or a snare to the unbelievers.
In light of what we have just learned we can now understand why God asked the question that He did in John 6:62. In John 6 many of the disciples were having a hard time understanding what Jesus was talking about. They wanted a physical sign like manna from heaven but Jesus tried to explain that it was not a physical sign like manna that would give them life but the word of God. The physical manna only resulted in death. Then in John 6:62-63 Jesus asked the question; “62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? 63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Why would Jesus ask this question concerning His ascension into
heaven in the middle of His talk about the spiritual word of God giving life verses the flesh, which brings death? With this question God is bringing into focus what the conditions would be like surrounding the time of His ascension. Understand again that Jesus will be returning in like manner as He left. So when we are looking at the events surrounding His ascension into heaven we are also looking at the events surrounding His return. Jesus therefore is referring to the time of both His ascension and return. The time in which the world would be looking for a sign of His physical ascension/return rather then looking into the spiritual word of God. And if we are looking to the physical rather then to the spiritual word of God we will totally miss the fact that God is returning in His word for the double forty time period of Judgment Day. God is really focusing on this point; if you cannot discern the spiritual word of God you will miss the time of my return. Jesus will come upon you as a thief in the night. The result will be death during this spiritual forty time period of Judgment Day. But those who are looking to the word of God for truth will have eternal life. Remember what Jesus said in John 6:63; “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life”.
