Lesson 2: Just About Everything You Learned in the Church is a Lie Part 1
What’s wrong with this statement: “I don’t fear God because I know I am saved because I claimed Jesus as my Savior so I don’t have to know when the Rapture or End of the World will occur because I’ll be ready whenever it does.”?
There are four major problems with this statement which will be the subject of the next four lessons. Here are the four mistruths: 1) I don’t fear God (implying that we don’t need to fear God), 2) because I know I am saved, 3) because I claimed Jesus as my Savior 4) so I don’t have to know when the Rapture or End of the World will occur because I’ll be ready whenever it does. In this study, we will address the first one.
Why should we fear God? Consider the following verses:
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Jeremiah 32:38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
Jeremiah 32:39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
Jeremiah 32:40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.
Fearing God is the first step to getting to know Him, as Proverbs 1:7 says, and thus, is a requirement for a child of God. In addition, fearing Him is spoken of by God as a very good thing and something that keeps the child of God close to Him, as the Jeremiah 32 verses point out. Another way to say ‘keeping close to God’ is to not stray from Him, i.e., not to follow false doctrine or teachings that are not supported by the Bible. Here’s another verse to support this idea:
Exodus 18:21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
In this verse, God is equating “men of truth” as those that “fear God.” Here are some more verses that show that individuals in the Bible that we know were truly saved, all feared God.
Genesis 42:18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:
Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Acst 7:31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
Acts 7:32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
Acts 13:16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.
Acts 10:21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
Acts 10:22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
Psalms 2:10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Psalms 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
And God comdemns those that don’t fear Him:
Ecclesiastes 8:13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
Jeremiah 5:20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
Jeremiah 5:21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
Jeremiah 5:22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Jeremiah 5:23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
Jeremiah 5:24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
Furthermore, God explains why it is important to fear Him:
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
The ultimate reason we need to fear God is that we all became sinners once Adam and Eve rebelled against God by eating of the Tree of Knowledge and we have no hope for salvation and eternal life unless we keep His commandments perfectly (which no man can do) or we are one of those that Christ died for as payment for our sins. If we don’t keep His commandments the Bible tells us we will suffer the wrath of God:
Deuteronomy 28:45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
Malachi 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
Malachi 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
We also need to fear God because we need to be saved before Salvation no longer becomes available, that is, before Judgment Day occurs:
Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
Joel 2:1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
In conclusion, one that doesn’t fear God, doesn’t know God and is not one of His. One cannot be saved without having a fear of God. And we can also know, that those that do not fear God, are not saved.
Acts 13:26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.
Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Malachi 3:16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
Malachi 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Malachi 3:18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
